Strategic Management Process
A continuous three-stage process consisting of Strategy Formulation (determining what to do), Strategy Implementation (converting strategy into action), and Strategy Evaluation (determining whether the strategy is working).
Resource-Based View (RBV)
A strategic management framework emphasizing that a firm's internal resources and capabilities are the principal sources of sustained competitive advantage, rather than external industry factors.
BCG Growth-Share Matrix
A portfolio management tool that classifies business units based on market growth rate and relative market share into Stars, Cash Cows, Question Marks, and Dogs.
Cash Cow
A business unit in the BCG Matrix that possesses high relative market share in a low-growth industry, generating more cash than it requires for reinvestment.
Dog
A business unit in the BCG Matrix characterized by low relative market share in a low-growth industry.
Backward Integration
A growth strategy in which a firm acquires or expands into business operations that supply inputs or raw materials for its existing products.
Forward Integration
A growth strategy where a firm gains ownership or increased control over distributors or retail outlets, moving downstream toward the end consumer.
Goal Congruence
A state in an organization where personal goals of individual managers and employees align directly with the overall strategic goals of the enterprise.
Participative Budgeting
A bottom-up budgeting approach where lower-level managers actively collaborate in setting operating targets, which boosts motivation but carries the risk of introducing budgetary slack.
Authoritative Budgeting
A top-down budgeting approach where senior management establishes operational targets without substantial subordinate negotiation, emphasizing speed and strategic control.
Budgetary Slack
The practice of intentionally overestimating expenses or underestimating revenues in a budget submission to create an easily achievable target for performance evaluation.
Currently Attainable Standard
A realistic operational standard that incorporates normal, unavoidable downtime, spoilage, and inefficiency while still requiring efficient performance.
Ideal Standard
An aggressive standard setting model that assumes perfect operating conditions with zero waste, no machinery breakdowns, and no delays.
Integrated Reporting
A reporting framework that concise communicates how an organization's strategy, governance, performance, and prospects create value over time across multiple capitals (e.g., financial, manufactured, intellectual, human, social, and natural).
Cash Equivalent
A short-term, highly liquid investment that is readily convertible to known amounts of cash with an original maturity of three months (90 days) or less when acquired by the entity.
SWOT Analysis
A strategic planning tool used to evaluate an organization's internal Strengths and Weaknesses alongside external Opportunities and Threats.
Cost Leadership Strategy
A competitive strategy directed at achieving the lowest cost of operation and production in an industry, allowing a firm to price lower than competitors or earn higher margins.
Differentiation Strategy
A strategy where a firm seeks to offer unique product attributes or services across an industry that customers perceive as valuable enough to pay a premium price.
Activity-Based Budgeting (ABB)
A budgeting process that begins with expected final outputs, determines the underlying activities required to produce them, and then calculates the required resource inputs.
Zero-Based Budgeting (ZBB)
A budgeting method requiring management to justify all proposed expenditures starting from a zero base each period using decision packages, rather than adjusting prior spending levels.
Rolling Budget
A continuous budget framework that maintains a constant planning horizon (e.g., 12 months) by automatically adding a new future time period as each current period expires.
Coefficient of Determination (R2)
A statistical metric in regression analysis that measures the proportion of sample variation in the dependent variable (y) explained by the linear relationship with independent variables.
Multicollinearity
A statistical phenomenon in multiple regression where two or more independent variables are highly correlated with each other, leading to unstable individual regression slope coefficients.
Learning Curve Model
A mathematical relationship (Y=aXb) where doubling cumulative production volume results in a constant percentage reduction in cumulative average labor hours per unit.
Expected Value of Perfect Information (EVPI)
The maximum amount a decision-maker should pay for perfect information, calculated as the expected value under perfect certainty minus the expected value of the best alternative without information.
