Conformation

A temporary molecular shape or orientation that results from rotation about a sigma bond.

Conformer

An individual molecular shape or orientation produced by the rotation around a single sigma bond.

Conformational Analysis

The study and comparison of the different orientations (conformers) of a molecule alongside their relative energies.

Newman Projection

A visual molecular representation framed by looking directly through a carbon-carbon bond to evaluate bond rotations and conformers.

Eclipsed Conformer

A Newman projection orientation where atoms or groups on the front carbon directly align with and block those on the back carbon, resulting in a $0^\text{o}$ angle between them and a higher energy state.

Staggered Conformer

A Newman projection orientation where the atoms or groups on the back carbon are evenly spaced between those on the front carbon, separated by angles such as $60^\text{o}$ and $180^\text{o}$, resulting in a lower energy state.

Anti Conformer

A specific staggered conformer where the two largest attached groups are positioned opposite each other at a $180^\text{o}$ angle, representing the lowest energy and most stable system.
