Territoriality

the attempt to influence or control people and events by delimiting and asserting control over a geographic area; the connection of people, their culture, and their economic systems to the land

Boundary

defined lines or limits that demarcate the territorial extent of a political entity, such as a country, state, or region

Superimposed Boundary

a border drawn over existing accepted borders by an outside or conquering force

Subsequent Boundary

a border drawn in an area that has been settled and where cultural landscapes exist or are in the process of being established

Antecedent Boundary

a border established before an area becomes heavily settled

Geometric Boundary

a mathematically drawn boundary that typically follows lines of latitude and longitude or is a straight-line arc between two points

Consequent Boundary

a type of subsequent boundary that takes into account the differences that exist within a cultural landscape, separating groups that have distinct languages, religions, ethnicities, or other traits

Defined Boundary

an agreement between two parties in a treaty or legal document to create a boundary

Delimited Boundary

the lines that are drawn on a map to represent the limits of a territory or political entity

Demarcated Boundary

a physical boundary that is visually represented on the ground through markers such as signs, walls, fences, or posts

Demilitarized Zone

a region where military forces and equipment are prohibited, usually established as a buffer between hostile countries or factions to reduce the risk of conflict

Berlin Conference

a meeting held in 1884-1885 where European powers convened to discuss the partition and colonization of Africa

Land Boundary

the defined lines that separate distinct political entities, such as countries, states, or territories, on the Earth's surface
