Oxidative Phosphorylation
Electron transport chain and chemiosmosis process where energy from electrons is used to pump H+ and eventually make ATP.
Electron Transport Chain
A series of redox reactions where electrons are passed from one carrier to another, releasing energy used to pump H+ ions and create an electrochemical gradient.
Chemiosmosis
The process where H+ ions flow down their concentration gradient through ATP synthase, powering the production of ATP.
NADH and FADH2
Electron carriers that donate electrons to the electron transport chain.
ATP Synthase
Enzyme that uses the proton gradient to phosphorylate ADP, forming ATP.
Ubiquinone (Q) and Cytochrome c (Cyt c)
Mobile electron carriers that transport electrons between complexes in the electron transport chain.
Proton-motive force
The electrochemical gradient of H+ ions across the inner mitochondrial membrane, used to drive ATP synthesis and other cellular processes.
