Phonological Awareness
Phonological awareness is a big umbrella term that phonemic awareness falls under. It is the general understanding of the sound structure of words, including rhymes, syllables, and phonemes.
Phonics
an explicit method of instruction that teaches the systematic relationship between letters and letter combinations in written language and individual sounds
Word Study
a method of instruction that teaches about words by integrating phonics, spelling, and vocabulary instruction, instead of strict memorization, so that students can identify them independently
Why is phonological awareness important?
Phonological awareness enables a child to learn and understand the alphabetic principle. They have to break down words into their individual sounds in order to understand the meaning of the word. Phonological awareness is very necessary to use phonics.
