Diffusion
The passive, random movement of particles, such as atoms or molecules, from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Brownian Motion
The random motion of particles within a fluid that serves as the underlying cause of diffusion.
Passive Process
A cellular or physical process, such as diffusion, that does not require energy input from the cell.
Rate of Diffusion
The speed at which particles move and spread throughout a medium.
Kinetic Molecular Theory
A theory heavily applied to gases and other matter stating that as temperature increases, the molecular kinetic energy and the speed of particle movement also increase.
Target Cold Water Temperature
Approximately 4×C, prepared by adding ice to distilled water and stirring until reaching the specified target.
Target Normal Water Temperature
Approximately 22∘C, achieved by allowing distilled water to sit at room temperature.
Target Hot Water Temperature
Approximately 70∘C, achieved by heating distilled water on a hot plate.
Cold Water Trial 1 Result
At an observed water temperature of 19∘C, the diffusion time recorded was 268.65s.
Normal Water Trial 1 Result
At an observed water temperature of 29∘C, the diffusion time recorded was 172.79s.
Hot Water Trial 1 Result
At an observed water temperature of 73∘C, the diffusion time recorded was 41.38s.
Corning PC-400D
The model of hot plate used for heating the water beaker during the laboratory activity.
