Comprehensive practice flashcards covering technical rules, road signs, driving behaviors, vehicle maintenance, and safety regulations from the Emirates Driving Company Light Vehicle Handbook.
What is the correct order of precedence when multiple traffic instructions are given at the same time?
What does the Left Hand Rule mandate at uncontrolled road junctions and intersections?
Priority must be given to vehicles approaching from the left.
How is the three-second rule used to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front on a highway?
Select a fixed roadside reference point. When the vehicle ahead passes it, count 'one hundred and one, one hundred and two, one hundred and three'. If you reach the reference point before finishing the count, you are driving too close.
What are the standard maximum speed limits inside city limits, outside built-up areas, and on major roads in the UAE?
Inside city limits is usually 80m/s, outside built-up areas is 100m/s, and on major roads it is 140m/s (with some roads set at 160m/s).
How does increasing vehicle speed affect braking distance?
Braking distance increases as the square of the speed increase: doubling speed quadruples braking distance (22=4), and tripling speed increases it ninefold (32=9).
Assuming a normal reaction time of 1s, what thinking distance is covered by a vehicle traveling at 40m/s, 80m/s, and 120m/s?
At 40m/s, thinking distance is approximately 12m; at 80m/s, it is 24m; and at 120m/s, it is 36m.
What are the height and seating position requirements for passengers sitting in front of an active airbag in the UAE?
A passenger must be at least 145cm tall to sit safely in front of an airbag. UAE law requires all children under 10years of age to sit in the rear seat.
Up to what age is it recommended for a child to travel in a rearward-facing safety seat?
Up to approximately 4years of age, as a rearward-facing seat absorbs violent shocks and protects the child's sensitive head and neck.
What penalty is specified under Article 350 of the UAE Federal Penal Code for exposing a child under 7 years of age to danger by leaving them unattended in a vehicle?
Detention or a fine not exceeding 10000AED (10000 Dirhams).
What are the four primary functions of engine oil in a vehicle?
What is the purpose of a catalytic converter, and what fuel type must be used in vehicles equipped with one?
It converts harmful compounds in exhaust gases (carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxide) into harmless compounds. Vehicles equipped with a catalytic converter must use unleaded petrol.
What is aquaplaning, and how much water can a tyre force away per second at 80m/s in heavy rain?
Aquaplaning occurs when tyres fail to drain water from the road surface, causing the car to skid along a layer of water without steering or braking control. At 80m/s, tyres can force away up to 25dm3/s (25 liters/s) of water.
What is the tread depth of a new tyre, and at what minimum tread depth does a tyre dangerously lose road grip?
A new tyre tread depth is about 9mm. It dangerously loses grip and steeply increases aquaplaning risk when worn down to 1.6mm.
What signal is indicated when a police officer raises their hand vertically as shown?
All vehicles approaching from behind, ahead, left, and right must stop.
What is the role of deformation zones in modern car bodywork?
They absorb much of the force of an impact in a collision, reducing the impact energy transferred to the occupants inside the cabin.
At what average rate does the human body eliminate alcohol, and how long does it take to eliminate 25cm3 (25 cl) of 40% spirit?
The body eliminates alcohol at an average rate of about 2cm3 (2 cl) of 40% spirit per hour. Eliminating 25cm3 (25 cl) takes 12 to 15hours.
What are the three developmental stages of a driver's moral code of conduct?
What is 'probability conditioning' in driving behavior?
It is a subconscious learning process where a driver develops dangerous habits (such as speeding through an intersection without slowing down) because they infrequently encounter hazards or other vehicles at that location.
What is the difference between oversteer and understeer?
Oversteer occurs (typically in rear-wheel-drive vehicles) when rear tyres lose grip during a turn, pushing the rear end out. Understeer occurs (typically in front-wheel-drive vehicles) when front tyres lose grip, causing the car to plow straight ahead despite turning the wheel.
What is the correct sequence for connecting jump leads to start a vehicle with a weak battery?
What are the four main categories of road traffic signs and their distinctive shapes and colors?
When is sounding the horn strictly prohibited in residential areas?
Sounding the horn in residential areas is prohibited from midnight (12:00 AM) to 6:00 AM, except to avoid danger from a moving vehicle.
What percentage of driving information is provided by the eyes, and what proportion of vision is in sharp focus?
Eyes provide 90% of all driving information. Only 2% of the visual field (the central visual field, corresponding to the red spot on the retina) is in sharp focus, while peripheral visual acuity is less than 0.1.
What actions must a driver take when an emergency vehicle with flashing lights or sirens approaches?
Slow down and pull over to the side of the road, stopping completely if necessary, to allow free passage. Disrupting or forcing passage through an emergency convoy is prohibited.
What do yellow crisscross lines at a box junction indicate?
Drivers must not enter a box junction unless their exit road is clear, except when turning left and prevented from proceeding only by oncoming traffic.
