What is Biology?
The scientific study of life and living organisms
What is the Scientific Method?
1) Figure out what question we are trying to ask and answer 2) Develop a testable hypothesis based on this question 3) Carry out the experiment 4) Analyze data and draw conclusions
What is Discovery based science?
A method that focuses on observing and describing phenomena in the natural world
What is Hypothesis based science?
A method that tries to explain nature by testing specific predictions
What is Inductive reasoning?
Logical process where you take specific observations or facts and use them to make a broader, general conclusion
What is Deductive reasoning?
Logical process where you move from general rules or premises to a specific, certain conclusion
What is an Element?
Can not be broken down further by using chemistry, made up of only one type of atom
What are the most comment elements in organisms?
Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon & Hydrogen
What are Trace elements?
Chemical elements required by living organisms in minute quantities, important in specfic functions. (Ex. Iodine is needed by the thyroid to make hormones)
What is a Molecule?
Consists of one or two more atoms bonded together
What is a Compound?
Consists of two or more different elements bonded together
What is an Atom?
The basic building block of all matter in the universe
What are the 3 Parts of an Atom?
Protons, Neutrons & Electrons
What is an Electron Shell?
The outside regions or energy levels surrounding an atom’s nucleus where electrons are located
