Simple Linear Regression Model Setup
The model given by yi=β0+β1xi+εˉi, where εi∼iid(0,σ2) for i=1,…,n, with fixed and non-random xi, implying the yi are independent with Var(yi)=σ2.
Residual (ei)
The difference between the observed response and the fitted value, defined as ei=yi−y^i.
Fitted Value (y^i)
The predicted value for the i-th observation obtained from least squares estimates, given by y^i=β^0+β^1xi.
Sum of Squared Deviations of x (Sxx)
The sum of squared deviations of the predictor variable from its sample mean, defined as Sxx=∑j=1n(xj−xˉ)2, with the assumption that Sxx>0.
Sum of Cross-Products (Sxy)
The sum of products of deviations of x and y from their respective sample means, defined as Sxy=∑j=1n(xj−xˉ)(yj−yˉ).
Leverage (hii)
The i-th diagonal element of the hat matrix, defined as hii=n1+Sxx(xi−xˉ)2, representing the weight placed on yi in determining its own fitted value y^i.
Intercept Estimator (β^0)
The least squares estimator of the intercept parameter, expressed in terms of sample means and the slope estimator as β^0=yˉ−β^1xˉ.
Slope Estimator (β^1)
The least squares estimator of the slope parameter, given by β^1=SxxSxy=∑j=1n(xj−xˉ)2∑j=1n(xj−xˉ)(yj−yˉ).
Fact 0 (Deviations from the Mean Sum to Zero)
The property that deviations from the sample mean sum to zero for any variable: ∑j=1n(xj−xˉ)=0 and ∑j=1n(yj−yˉ)=0.
Lemma 1 (Slope Estimator as a Weighted Sum)
The formula establishing that the slope estimator can be written as a weighted linear combination of the observed values yj: β^1=∑j=1nSxxxj−xˉyj.
Weight (hij)
The coefficient of yj in the linear representation of the fitted value y^i, defined as hij=n1+Sxx(xi−xˉ)(xj−xˉ).
Lemma 2 (Fitted Values as a Weighted Sum)
The result showing that each fitted value is a weighted linear combination of the responses: y^i=∑j=1nhijyj, where hij=n1+Sxx(xi−xˉ)(xj−xˉ).
Lemma 3 (Sum of Squared Weights)
The algebraic property that the sum of the squared weights equals the diagonal weight: ∑j=1nhij2=hii for each i=1,…,n.
Covariance of yi and Fitted Value y^i
The covariance between the observed response and its fitted value, which evaluates to Cov(yi,y^i)=hiiσ2.
Variance of the Fitted Value (Var(y^i))
The variance of the predicted response y^i, derived via Lemma 3 to be Var(y^i)=σ2∑j=1nhij2=σ2hii.
Variance of a Residual Theorem (Var(ei))
The theorem establishing that in simple linear regression, the variance of the i-th residual is given by Var(ei)=σ2(1−hii) for each i=1,…,n.
