LYMPHOID ORGANS
Red bone marrow, thymus, lymph nodes, spleen, SALT, MALT, GALT, BALT, skin, mucosa, gut, breast- associated lymphatic tissue and A loose connective tissue framework that houses aggregations of lymphocytes primary lymphatic organs
Markers – Antigens
proteins, glycoproteins, lipoproteins found on all cells and microbes that can be recognized by the immune system as self or non-self
PAMPs – pathogen-associated molecular patterns
antigens that many microbes have in common
PPRs – patten recognition receptors
Host cell receptors that recognize PAMPs
MPS – Mononuclear phagocyte system
phagocytes throughout connective tissues that surround organs
Pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs)
Recognized by phagocytes and other defensive cells and Serve as signal molecules on the surfaces of microbes, Not present in mammals
Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs)
Found on the surfaces of phagocytes, dendritic cells, endothelial cells, and lymphocytes that Recognize and bind PAMPs and are Found on the surface at all times, regardless of whether they have encountered a PAMP
Toll-like receptors (TLRs)
a type of PRR that recognizes PAMPs and orchestrates a defense response to the pathogen
Collectins
exogenous proteins not part of cell membrane that roam blood & tissues
Epitope
portion of the antigen molecule recognized and responded to by a lymphocyte
Haptens
Too small by themselves to elicit an immune response but if linked to a carrier group, the combined molecule develops immunogenicity
Alloantigens
Proteins and other molecules of one person that are antigenic to another and Cell surface markers that occur in some members of the same species but not in others
Superantigens
Bacterial exotoxins that are potent stimuli for T cells Activate T cells at a rate 100 times greater than ordinary antigens
Antigen-presenting cells (APCs)
Macrophages, B cells, Dendritic cells
