14th Amendment

15th Amendment
Constitutional amendment that granted African American men the right to vote.
Reconstruction Acts of 1867
Laws that laid out the process for readmitting Southern states into the Union and established military governance in the South.
Carpetbaggers
Northerners who moved to the South after the Civil War, often perceived as opportunists.
Scalawags
Southern whites who supported Reconstruction and the Republican Party, often viewed as traitors by other Southerners.
Hiram Rhodes Revels
The first African American to serve in the U.S. Congress, representing Mississippi during Reconstruction.
Sharecropping
An agricultural system where former slaves worked land owned by white landowners in exchange for a share of the crops.
Tenant Farming
A system where farmers rented land and paid rent in cash or crops, allowing for more independence than sharecropping.
Share Tenancy
A farming arrangement similar to sharecropping, where workers chose their crops and bought their own supplies, allowing for potential savings.
New South
A term describing the South's transition from an economy based on plantations and slavery to one focused on industrialization and diversification.
KKK (Ku Klux Klan)
A white supremacist group that emerged during Reconstruction, targeting African Americans and their allies to suppress their rights.
Enforcement Acts
Laws passed by Congress to protect the voting rights of African Americans and prevent interference in their right to vote.
Jim Crow Laws
State and local laws that enforced racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans in the South.
Plessy v
A landmark Supreme Court case that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation under the "separate but equal" doctrine.
Brown v
A landmark Supreme Court case that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
Booker T
An African American leader who advocated for vocational education and economic self-reliance for African Americans.
W.E.B
An African American leader and co-founder of the NAACP, who advocated for civil rights and higher education for African Americans.
