Nomothetic Approach
A variable-centered approach to personality psychology that focuses on identifying general dimensions differentiating people within a population, emphasizing consistency of behavior across people, time, and situations.
Idiographic Approach
A person-centered approach that measures and models the individual person as a holistic unit, evaluating personality dynamics and variability relative only to oneself rather than in comparison to others.
Allport's Definition of Personality
Defined by Gordon W. Allport (1937) as "the dynamic organization within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determine his unique adjustments to his environment."
Ecological Fallacy in Personality
The logical error of assuming that between-person (population-level) structural patterns necessarily exist within or explain deterministic causal mechanisms inside an individual person.
Ergodicity
A mathematical condition in personality modeling requiring between-person and within-person structures to be identical so that population-level averages accurately describe psychological processes occurring within individuals.
P-technique Factor Analysis
A statistical data-reduction method introduced by Raymond B. Cattell (1946, 1957) that applies factor analysis to multivariate time-series data from a single individual (N=1) to extract within-person personality structure.
Experience Sampling Method (ESM)
An intensive longitudinal data collection method where participants respond to brief assessments multiple times per day in their everyday lives to capture real-time states, behaviors, and situational contexts.
Contemporaneous Relationships
Probabilistic within-time-point ("while") associations between personality manifestations occurring at the same measurement occasion, calculated after detrending cross-time-point patterns.
Lagged Relationships
Probabilistic cross-time-point ("if…then") associations estimating how personality manifestations at time t predict manifestations at time t+1 across measurement intervals.
Graphical VAR (Vector Autoregression)
A time-series modeling technique that utilizes graphical LASSO regularization on an inverse covariance matrix to simultaneously estimate sparse lagged and contemporaneous partial correlation networks.
Network Nodes
The variables or indicators under investigation in a network model (such as specific Big Five state items), represented visually as circles or vertices.
Network Edges
The statistical connections or relationships among nodes in a network matrix, representing partial correlations or cross-lagged regression weights.
Strength Centrality
A quantitative network index defined as the absolute sum of edge weights connecting a focal node to all other nodes in the network.
In-Strength Centrality
In a directed network model, the sum of absolute edge weights converging onto a target node, indicating the degree to which that node is predicted by other nodes.
Out-Strength Centrality
In a directed network model, the sum of absolute edge weights diverging from a target node, indicating the degree to which that node predicts other nodes.
Ipsative Consistency
A person-centered metric indexing the longitudinal stability of an individual's within-person profile of trait configurations or network edge weights over time.
Rank-Order Consistency
A variable-centered metric indexing whether individual differences in specific edge weights or trait levels remain stable across people over time.
Emergence
The phenomenon where observable between-person trait levels arise as macroscopic outcomes of dynamic microscopic interactions among state manifestations within individuals over time.
If-Then Contingencies
Behavioral signatures proposed by Mischel and Shoda (p(B∣C)) describing person-specific conditional patterns where specific behaviors reliably follow specific internal or situational precursors.
GIMME (Group Iterative Multiple Model Estimation)
An idiographic technique that estimates individual-level models while retaining group-level paths only if statistically significant for at least 75% of individuals in a sample.
Personality and Interpersonal Roles Study (PAIRS)
A longitudinal ESM study of college students (N=372 at Wave 1; N=217 at Wave 2) evaluated across two years to examine the structure, consistency, and dynamics of idiographic personality networks.

Idiographic Time-Series Workflow
An analytic pipeline where multivariate time-series raw data (V1 to Vp across time ti1 to tin) for each person (P1 to PN) are converted into matrix association slices (e11 to epp) and visualized as individual networks or profile lines.
