why do we use tools?
create and manipulate visual data … (more quickly, more safely, more accurate, less effort)
what is the purpose of software tools?
create or display some sort of data (divided into creators and viewers)
what are some of the options that brushes might have?
basic brushes are simple geometric shapes.. clean/rough lines, simulate physical media, patterns…. variables include size, spacing, hardness, opacity, jitter, pressure sensitivity, pen tilt (dynamic)
what are layers, and what is their purpose?
store multiple images behind the scenes.. often combined into a single image when data is exported as a single file (flatten, collapse, merge) because images are understood by many programs
what are vector images made of?
made out of points, lines, and curves that define a shape
what are pixel images made of?
tiny colored dots or pixels.. data varies according to size
what are the differences between vector and pixel images?
vector images can be scaled with no quality loss, while pixel quality degrades.
vector images are made of bezier curves, defined by control points.
what are the differences between destructive and non-destructive editing?
d: working with data directly creating permanent changes, by overwriting existing values
nd: your actions change some variable in a formula.. some modification to be applied to the source data and final results are based on all variables. source data is unchanged
what is a mask, and what is its purpose?
images (grayscale) used to control how parts of other images are drawn/processed (effects are applied). masks allow you to change the base image without changing it
what is the difference between parametric modeling and mesh modeling?
mesh: transforming or tweaking components by hand to achieve a shape (sub divide, bevel, extrude) SHAPES are not created in parameters.. uses direct manipulation
parametric: CAD programs, shapes are created in parameters, precision is critical in manufacturing context. direct manipulation is rare
what is the difference between sculpting programs and modeling programs?
sculpting: meshes are exported, few tools, retopologize, more art-oriented..
when would you want to use a modeling program over a sculpting program? (vice versa)
modeling focuses on precision, sculpting emphasizes creativity and high-resolution meshes that require retopologizing (creating low-resolution meshes for use in other programs)
why do we need to export data between programs?
3d programs work differently but all 3D data underlying is the same. many programs dont understand unique data from other programs
what are the benefits of procedural content creation?
p content: creating data with an algorithm instead of manually. it is faster, more precise than doing it by hand. algorithm must be created first!.. automate tedious and repetitive work, variety,
what are the drawbacks?
more doesnt guarentee better, don’t do “interesting” very well but AI is changing this.. requires a lot of set up, creating the correct data is hardm time consuming
is there anything that can’t be created procedurally?
what is a hybrid approach when it comes to procedural content?
a procedure to generate content and a person to evaluate that content
