Biology
The study of life, derived from "bio-" meaning life and "-ology" meaning the study of.
Biotic
Refers to living or alive components in an environment.
Abiotic
Refers to nonliving components in an environment.
Cellular Organization
The characteristic of life stating that all living things are made of one or more cells.
Homeostasis
The state in which living things maintain a stable internal environment, controlling factors like body temperature, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels (glucose).
Metabolism
The sum total of chemical reactions through which an organism obtains and uses energy.
8 Characteristics of Living Things
The eight features shared by all living things: growth and development, respond to the environment, made of cells, reproduce, maintain homeostasis, metabolism, evolve, and contain DNA.
Interdependence in Nature
The principle that all living things interact with and respond to their environment and other living things.
Biosphere
The "living planet" or area on Earth where all life occurs, connecting all forms of life across the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere.

Atmosphere
The air region of the biosphere where life occurs.
Hydrosphere
The water region of the biosphere where life occurs.
Lithosphere
The earth or land region of the biosphere where life occurs.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid; the universal genetic code containing instructions for creating proteins, which is passed on from parents to children.
Heredity
The concept that all living things are based on a universal genetic code (DNA) that transfers instructions from parents to offspring.
Evolution
The process by which living things change over time as a group; occurs in populations rather than individual organisms.
Hypothesis
A scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested in ways that support or reject it, often written as an "If…then…" statement or "I predict…because…".
