Voice vs Point of View
-Voice: personality; sense of humor; creates sense of intimacy; no formula for creating it; developed through practice; reading aloud helps develop rhythm; STYLE IN WHICH POINT OF VIEW IS CONVEYED
-POV: perspective; ideological slant; bias is acceptable as long as it’s backed with facts; use personal experience to illustrate your unique POV; be original, that’s what people want
What are 3 questions to ask yourself when writing/planning to write a column?
What is the column’s purpose?
How do you want the reader to feel?
What do you want the reader to remember most?
What makes a good column/good content/good columnist?
-4S formula: short, simple (readable but not insulting to reader’s intelligence), sound (adheres to journalistic ethics), sing (make it compelling)
-be open to criticism
-meet deadlines
-be original
-don’t write outside the assigned definition of the column
-don’t have a generic voice/style
-don’t write columns as blog/journal entries
-meet the assigned length
