New cards

In the chartrand and bargh 1999 research discussed in class whats it about

2 groups where the participants were in a room answering questions and then the other person in the room with them was a confederate they were programed what to do and they either mimicked the participant or were programed to either rub their face or shake their foot. the participants are asked after if they remember anything weird about the other person and the people who were in the room with the person who did not mimic them said nothing was weird and so remember it happening and they dont remember them bouncing or doing anything. After both groups were also given a question form about the other person and the group that had the confederates mimicking them felt that they had a higher chance of being friends with them and liked them over all more.

New cards

people might conform because of

evolutionarily adaptive “ the cameleon affect “

informational social influence

normative social influence

3
New cards

Informational social influence is

when people dont know whats right so we conform to others to know whats right

4
New cards

Autokinetic affect is

an illusion where if you where placed in a dark room and only have a stationary light being projected and starred at it for a long time after 20 or so seconds you would think that dot is now moving when its not

5
New cards

In class the research that sherif 1936 discussed what about informational social influence

This was where participants on round one used the autokinetic effect to see how it affected conformity. First round they were by themselfves and told to tell researchers how long that dot moved and then they went back in later with two other people and their answers got more and more close to eachother in answer and if they back in for another time alone then their answers would be most simular to the end of the results from time 2 because they truely beleive and have decided that that was right.

6
New cards

informational social influence often is

a private acceptance

7
New cards

Infromational influence is used more likely in what kinds of situations

ambiguous ( no comparison of whats right) , a crisis or when others are experts

8
New cards

Normative social influence is

they conform to increase their odds to be like or accepted or to become normal

9
New cards

Asch, 1951, disscussed in class talked about what research and disagree against whom?

Disagreed with sherif and said that if the answer is very clear than they would stick to it and not conform becsause they know 100 percent that that is the right answer. This study was when your sitting at a table with 2 cards with lines and one of them is one line and the other card has multiple lines and ur supposed to say which one is most like that one line and so everyone at the table( confeds trained to say all the same answer) says the wrong answer and when its ur turn you confrom and say the worng answer even though u know its not right. although when the others said difffernet wrong answers or one person says the correct answer theres less conformity

10
New cards

Normative social influence is

a public acceptance

11
New cards

In the real world normative and informational

can exist together

12
New cards

In class Crandalls 1988 research study was

the greek population, girls were asked about eating patterns ( binding or purging) and then asked to rank all the girls in the sororoity based on likability and found there were different eating norms in each house but based on how close the indivudal girls behavior was at the house that everyone else did the more that girl was liked and vise versa

13
New cards

When your unclear on eating patterns when you first join a greek house

you look around at what everyone else is doing which is informational and then you have the choice to fit in or not which is normative

14
New cards

Some conditions that lead to conformity

  • -awareness of the norm- what you percieve the norm to be

  • even when they are wrong

  • - pluristic ignorance

15
New cards

Pluristic ignorance is

when people mistakently beileive that their own thoughts and feeling are unique special or different from everyone else even thought they are legit the same

16
New cards

example of pluristic ignorance

bad bunny and the super bowl

  • you say that you like bad bunny because your trying to learn spanish while everyone else is just following the trend

not raising your hand in class becasue you think that everyone else must know whats going on so you dont raise your hand even though everyone else has the same thoughts as you

17
New cards

Pluristic inorance at the uofa shows what

that we mistakently infer that our reasons for drinking are special but we are all the same and do it because we all do it

18
New cards

Factors that increase conformity

group size - which the ash study when poeple had more people at the table it make there was more confority but to a certain extent.

no allies in the group - like if no one has the same opions as you or has all the same wrong answers then your more likely to conform to those

personalitity characteristics - if your older your less likkely to conform or if you have low confidence and stuff your more likely to conform

19
New cards

Compliance is a form of what

conformity
