Reticulocytes
is a immature RBC with no nucleus
stain is done with new methane blue
horses have no reticulocytes
absolute reticulocyte is the most accurate assessment of erythropoiesis
feline reticulocytes
aggregate and punctate
aggregate is the only one we count
reticulocyte count
expression of the percentage of RBCs that are reticulocytes
percentage per 1000 RBCs
not done on horses since they do not release reticulocytes
higher percentage - hemolytic anemia
lower percentage- hemorrhagic anemia
regenerative anemia
functional bone marrow actively responding to RBC loss or destruction
evidenced by elevated reticulocyte count, polychromasia (multiple colors), anisocytosis, macrocytosis (high MCV), hypochromasia (low MCHC)
Bone marrow evaluation
indications > unexplained persistent pancytopenia (Decrease in all types of blood cells), non regenerative anemia, atypical/immature cells in circulation
collection sites > proximal humerus
blood smear time
must be done within an hour of collection and an EDTA tube should be used
corrected reticulocyte count equation
multiply observed retics by the observed PCV and then divide by normal PCV
normal PCV: dog- 45%; cat- 35%
