Leaves arranged in 3 ranks (forming a spiral around the stem). Leaf blades often V-shaped or folded. Sheaths are closed but may split.
Rushes Leaf Arrangement
Leaves are often reduced or bladeless (especially Juncus). When present, they form cylindrical or flat blades, but much simpler than grass blades. Leaves can appear grass-like, but lack obvious ligules or auricles.
Grasses Leaf Arrangement
Leaves arranged in 2 ranks (alternate, on opposite sides of the stem). Blade + sheath combination is usually obvious. Presence of ligules and sometimes auricles at the collar
Grasses Ligules and Auricles
Ligule (membrane or ring of hairs) Auricles (small ear-like lobes. Clear blade/sheath transition.
Rushes Ligules and Auricles
Do not have true ligules. Do not have auricles. Collar region is inconspicuous.

Sedges Flowers / Inflorescences
Flowers are in spikelets WITHOUT glumes arranged like grasses. Often look compact, spiky, or bristly. No obvious petals
Rushes Flowers / Inflorescences
Flowers have 6 tepals (look like tiny brown/green “star” flowers). Inflorescences often loose, branched, or appearing side-attached to stem.
Grasses Flowers / Inflorescences
Flowers in true spikelets with glumes, lemmas, and paleas. Inflorescences are spikes, racemes, or panicles.
Sedges Habitat Clue
Love wet areas (marshes, ditches, seeps).Common in peatlands and streamsides.
Rushes Habitat Clue
Prefer wet to moist soils but tolerate drier conditions. Often in meadows, pond edges, ditches.
Grasses Habitat Clue
Found everywhere — dry fields, lawns, wetlands, forests, dunes.
