Nervous System

communication system that connects the body to the brain

CNS (Central Nervous System)

The division of the nervous system composed of the brain and spinal cord, encased in bone and made up of neurons

PNS (Peripheral Nervous System)

The division of the nervous system encompassing all nerves located outside the brain and spinal cord.

Sensory Neuron

A type of neuron that transmits information into the brain and spinal cord.

Afferent

Term describing information coming in or arriving at a region.

Motor Neurons

Neurons that transmit signals from the brain and spinal cord out to muscles, organs, and glands.

Efferent

Term describing information exiting a region.

Somatic NS

A division of the PNS that connects the brain, major muscles, and sensory system.

Autonomic NS

A division of the PNS that automatically controls viscera (internal organs) and manages involuntary, subconscious body processes necessary for life.

Sympathetic NS

A division of the autonomic nervous system responsible for the fight or flight response, which preps the body for action.

Parasympathetic NS

A division of the autonomic nervous system responsible for rest + digest functions, which conserves energy.
