What is meiosis?
A type of cell division that produces four genetically different haploid cells.
How many daughter cells does meiosis produce?
Four daughter cells.
How many chromosomes do cells produced by meiosis contain?
Half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell.
What is a haploid cell?
A cell containing one set of chromosomes.
What is a gamete?
A reproductive sex cell, such as a sperm or egg cell, containing a haploid set of chromosomes.
Why is meiosis important in sexual reproduction?
It produces haploid gametes so that fertilisation restores the normal diploid chromosome number.
Why are gametes genetically different?
Meiosis produces cells with different combinations of genetic information.
How many chromosomes are in a human gamete?
23 chromosomes.
How many chromosomes are in a human diploid body cell?
46 chromosomes.
What happens to chromosome number at fertilisation?
The haploid nuclei of two gametes fuse to restore the diploid chromosome number.
