cephalic phase (reflex phase)
takes place before food enters stomach (triggered by the smell, taste, thought, or sight of food)
signals to brain from other senses to increase gastric secretion
loss of appetite surpress cephalic reflex
gastric phase
lasts 3-4 hours
triggered by local neural and hormonal mechanisms by entry of food
stimulates parasympathetic neurons to release digestive hormones (acetylcholine. gastrin, enteroendocrine G cells, HCl)
activates smooth muscle contractions
intestinal phase
has both excitatory and inhibitory elements
duodenum has major role in regulating the stomach and its emptying
duodenum’s role in stomach emptying:
intestinal mucolsal cells release hormone called enteric (intestinal) gastrin, which furter excites gastric juice secretion
enterogastric reflex
inhibits secretion
closes the pyloric sphincter to block additional chyme from entering the duodenum
mucosal barrier
protects the stomach from self digestion
thick lated of bicarbonate rich mucous which neutralize acid
epithelial cells meet at tight junctions making it impermeable
stem cells are nearby to quickly replace damaged epithelium
