What are tissues?
Groups of cells that work together towards a common function
Histology
study of tissues
4 types of tissues in the body?
epithelial, connective, muscular, nervous
What is epithelial tissue?
tissue that covers and lines the surfaces and cavities and forms glands
functions of epithelial tissue
protection, control permeability (diffusion, absorption, filtration, excretion, secretion), sensory reception, produces special secretions
What are some main functions of connective tissue?
supports other tissues, binds organs together, transport, energy
What is the main function of muscle tissue?
create movement
What is the main function of nervous tissue?
communication and control
What characteristics do all epithelial tissue share?
closely packed cells, avascular, 3 surfaces, nerve supply, high capacity for renewal
avascular
without blood vessels
basement membrane
Layer between epithelium and underlying connective tissue

2 ways to name epithelial tissue
number of cell layers and cell shape (at top)
simple
one layer of cells attached to the basement membrane

Stratified
2 or more layers of cells

Squamous
Flat cells

Cuboidal
cube-shaped cells, as tall as they are wide

Columnar
column shaped, taller than wide

pseudo
false, deceptive, fake
transitional tissue
cells at top change shape when tissue stretches

endocrine glands
Glands that release hormones into the bloodstream

exocrine glands
Glands that secrete chemicals out through a duct and onto a surface (sweat, saliva)
