Wernicke’s Aphasia

*A condition characterised by either partial or total loss of the ability to understand what is being said or read

^the individual maintains the ability to speak but speech may contain unnecessary or made-up words

Characteristics

  • Poor spoken language comprehension (can produce)

  • Lack ability to interpret meanings of words

  • Inability to convert thoughts to words

  • Production of meaningless speech

  • Speech fluent and absence of any strain or searching words

  • Use of function words but not many content words (prepositions e.g. it, and, this)

  • Lack of self-awareness of condition

  • Maintain social conventions of conversation

*Wernicke’s area= superior left temporal lobe

*Broca’s area= inferior left frontal lobe
