Wernicke’s Aphasia
*A condition characterised by either partial or total loss of the ability to understand what is being said or read
^the individual maintains the ability to speak but speech may contain unnecessary or made-up words
Characteristics
Poor spoken language comprehension (can produce)
Lack ability to interpret meanings of words
Inability to convert thoughts to words
Production of meaningless speech
Speech fluent and absence of any strain or searching words
Use of function words but not many content words (prepositions e.g. it, and, this)
Lack of self-awareness of condition
Maintain social conventions of conversation
*Wernicke’s area= superior left temporal lobe
*Broca’s area= inferior left frontal lobe
