Power Engineer
A heat transfer professional responsible for operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting power and process plant equipment safely, reliably, and efficiently while minimizing the environmental footprint.
Specific Heat of Water
The heat required to raise the temperature of water, defined as 4.19kJ/kg⋅K, making it an ideal heat transfer medium.
Phase Change Expansion of Water
The expansion factor of 1600 times that occurs when liquid water transforms into steam.
Fundamental Steam Cycle
A closed heat transfer loop in which water absorbs heat in a boiler to produce steam, delivers heat to a process heater, passes through a steam trap, and returns as liquid to a condensate tank.

Power Generation Cycle
An integrated plant system where heat from a furnace evaporates water in a boiler, producing high-pressure steam that drives a turbine and generator, before being condensed and recycled by boiler feedwater pumps.

Energy Conversion Sequence in a Thermal Power Plant
The four-step sequence converting chemical energy in fuel to heat via combustion, heat to steam potential energy in the boiler, potential energy to mechanical energy in the turbine, and mechanical energy to electrical energy in the generator.
Historical Boiler Origin (Early 1700s)
The initial industrial use of steam boilers in England during the early 1700s, designed to pump water out of mine shafts.
Failure Analysis
The primary historical driver and motivation for developing formalized curriculum, safety codes, and standards in Power Engineering.

Certificate of Competency
An official legal document issued under jurisdictional authority (such as ABSA under the Safety Codes Act) certifying that an engineer meets the regulatory requirements for a specific class level.
Circadian Rhythm
The body's natural 24-hour cycle regulating hormones, body temperature, blood pressure, digestion, and energy levels, which can be disrupted by shift work.
