• Both are Sticky and gelatinous layers external to the cell wall

• Both are composed of Polysaccharide, Protein, or both

What is the difference between the capsule and slime layer? (2)

• Capsule is organized and firmly attached to cell wall

• Slime layer is unorganized and loosely attached to cell wall

How does a capsule help with virulence? Give an example of bacteria thats uses the capsule this way (2)

• Protection against phagocytosis (acts as a camouflage and armour)

• eg. Streptococcus pneumoniae

What do slime layers allow bacteria to do? And give an example. (2)

• Allow bacteria to attach to surfaces (Medical implants, water pipes, your teeth

• eg. streptococcus mutans can use sucrose from your diet to make a slime layer snd stick to your teeth (leads to cavities)
