SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
The practice of improving your website so it ranks higher on Google and other search engines to attract free, organic traffic without paid ads.
SEM (Search Engine Marketing)
A paid search advertising strategy (such as Google Ads) that yields instant visibility but stops generating traffic when the budget ends.

Crawling
Step 1 of how search engines work, where Google's bots (spiders) continuously scan billions of web pages and follow links to discover new and updated content.
Indexing
Step 2 of how search engines work, where discovered web pages are analyzed and stored in Google's database, organized by topic, relevance, and quality.
Ranking
Step 3 of how search engines work, where Google's algorithm scores all indexed pages and returns the most relevant, authoritative results for a user search query.
On-Page SEO
All optimization elements within your own webpage that affect ranking and usability, including content quality, keyword placement, headings, meta tags, URLs, and image optimization.

Off-Page SEO
Actions taken outside your website to build authority and trust with search engines, including backlinks, domain authority, social signals, online reviews, and brand reputation.

Technical SEO
Behind-the-scenes setup that improves website infrastructure, including page speed, Core Web Vitals, mobile-friendliness, HTTPS security, crawlability, sitemaps, and structured data.

Keyword
The specific words or phrases people type into Google when searching for something online.
SERP
Acronym for Search Engine Results Page — the page Google displays after a user submits a search query.
Organic Traffic
Free website visitors who click on your result directly from search engines rather than from paid advertisements.
Bounce Rate
The percentage of website visitors who leave your site immediately after viewing only a single page.
CTR (Click-Through Rate)
The percentage of people who view your result in search engine results and actually click on it.
Backlink
A hyperlink from an external website pointing to your site, which Google evaluates as a vote of confidence.
Short-Tail Keywords
Broad search terms consisting of 1–2 words with high search volume and high competition, but lower conversion rates.
Long-Tail Keywords
Specific search phrases consisting of 3+ words with lower competition, higher conversion rates, and easier ranking potential.
Informational Search Intent
Search queries where users are seeking knowledge, answers, or guides (e.g., 'What is SEO?').
Navigational Search Intent
Search queries where users are looking for a specific website or branded page (e.g., 'Ethiopian Airlines official site').
Transactional Search Intent
Search queries where users are prepared to make a purchase or take immediate action (e.g., 'Book flight Addis to Nairobi').
Keyword Density
The proportion of a webpage's word count occupied by a targeted keyword, calculated as Keyword Density=Word CountKeyword Count×100 with a recommended target of 1–2%.
Keyword Stuffing
The practice of unnaturally repeating keywords in content to manipulate search rankings, which causes Google to issue ranking penalties.
Meta Description
A brief summary of a webpage (~150–160 characters) shown in Google results that boosts CTR, though not a direct ranking factor.
Google Business Profile
A complete business listing (hours, address, photos, reviews) that triggers local map results known as the 'Local Pack' on search engine results pages.
Google Search Console (GSC)
A free tool from Google used to monitor keyword rankings, search positions, impressions, CTR, crawl errors, indexing status, and Core Web Vitals.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
A free web analytics platform that measures traffic sources, user behavior, time on site, goal conversions, and audience demographics.
E-E-A-T
Google guideline acronym for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness, used to reward authentic, expert-authored content.
Core Web Vitals
Google user experience metrics that measure page load performance (LCP), interactivity (INP), and visual stability (CLS).
Mobile-First Indexing
Google's practice of evaluating and indexing the mobile version of a website's content for search ranking purposes.
Structured Data / Schema
Code markup that helps search engines interpret page content to display rich snippet results (such as review stars, FAQs, and events) on SERPs.
