Learning in University Factors
The four foundational factors of learning in university: 1) Prior knowledge + academic background, 2) Motivation, 3) Mindset, and 4) Situational Knowledge.
Learning Characteristics
In university, learning occurs outside class through active engagement, prioritizes depth over recall (focusing on why and how), and emphasizes reason.
Reading & Writing in University
Academic reading and writing is more complex, independent, and source-based; style varies by discipline; feedback drives improvement; and work should present an original argument rather than a summary.
The Dunning-Kruger Effect
A cognitive bias associated with the illusion of explanatory depth, where people who perform worst on a task tend to overestimate their performance.
Mindsets
Refers to Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset, which shape how individuals approach challenges and learning.
Metacognition and Self-Regulation
A cyclical process of managing one's own learning that consists of three main phases: Plan, Practice, and Evaluate.
Plan (Metacognition)
The metacognitive phase where you analyze the learning task, set goals, and select strategies.
Practice (Metacognition)
The metacognitive phase where you employ your strategies and monitor your progress.
Evaluate (Metacognition)
The metacognitive phase where you evaluate your performance and the effectiveness of your strategies.
Step 1: Set a Goal
The first step in the 5-step learning process (e.g., Improve a quiz score).
Step 2: Pick a Strategy
The second step in the 5-step learning process (e.g., Active Recall).
Step 3: Implement and Monitor
The third step in the 5-step learning process (e.g., Read, Recite, Recall).
Step 4: Assess the Results
The fourth step in the 5-step learning process (e.g., asking 'Did it work?').
Step 5: Reflect on the Process
The fifth step in the 5-step learning process, involving reflection on the overall approach and outcomes.
