Bone stem cells
Osteoblasts
Secrete Bone matrix
Osteocytes
monitor & maintain bone matrix
Osteoclasts
bone resorption
Osteon
The structural unit of compact bone
Lamellae
A series of concentric tubes of bone matrix called
Central canal
runs through center of each osteon & allows passage of BV and nerves
Perforating canals
lie at right angles to the long axis of the bone & connect the blood & nerve supply of the medullary cavity to the central canals
Lacunae
small holes housing the osteocytes – are found at the junctions of the lamellae
Canaliculi
a series of hair like channels that connect to each other and the central canal
Interstitial lamellae
lie between intact osteons, filling the spaces in between
Circumferential lamellae
located just beneath the periosteum & extending around the circumference of the bone
Endochondral ossification
bone develops by replacing hyaline cartilage = endochondral bone
Intramembranous ossification
bone develops from a fibrous membrane = membranous bone
