Summation
The discrete version of an integral, representing the sum of a sequence of terms xa+xa+1+⋯+xb and denoted by a stretched-out capital Greek letter sigma (∑).
Index of Summation
The dummy variable (commonly i, j, or k) that iterates through all integer values from the lower bound to the upper bound inclusive.
Empty Sum
A summation where the upper bound is strictly less than the lower bound (b<a); it evaluates to 0, the identity element for addition.
Scope of a Summation
The reach of a summation expression, which extends up to the first addition or subtraction symbol that is not enclosed in parentheses or part of a larger term.
Einstein Summation Convention
A notational shortcut used in theoretical physics where the summation sign (∑) is omitted entirely when the index spans an obvious range.
Infinite Sum
A summation with an infinite upper bound, defined as the limit of partial sums sn converging to x if for any ϵ>0, there exists an N such that ∣sn−x∣<ϵ for all n>N.
Double Sum
An expression in which one summation is nested inside another, behaving like nested loops to aggregate terms over all pairs of indices.
Arithmetic Series
A sum of terms where the difference between adjacent terms is constant, with the fundamental formula given by ∑i=1ni=2n(n+1).
Geometric Series
A series where the ratio between adjacent terms is constant; its finite sum is ∑i=0nri=1−r1−rn+1 (r=1), and its infinite sum is 1−r1 for ∣r∣<1.
Harmonic Number (Hn)
The sum of the reciprocals of the first n natural numbers, defined as ∑i=1ni1=Hn, which can be bounded via integration.
Linearity of Summation
The algebraic property allowing constant factors to be factored out of sums (∑axi=a∑xi) and sums within sums to be split into separate summations (∑(xi+yi)=∑xi+∑yi).
Guess but Verify Method
A summation solution method where one evaluates the sum for small values of the upper limit to recognize a pattern, then formally verifies the closed-form formula using induction.
Product Notation (∏)
A discrete operator using capital Greek letter pi (∏) to denote repeated multiplication of a sequence, where an empty product is defined to equal 1.
Big Operators on Empty Sets
Aggregations over an empty set that yield the identity element of the operation: 0 for sum, 1 for product, True for Big AND, False for Big OR, ∅ for Big Union, and undefined for Big Intersection.

System of Power Sum Equations
A symmetric system of equations specifying the sums of powers for variables a, b, and c (a+b+c=4, a2+b2+c2=10, and a3+b3+c3=22) to solve for the higher-degree power sum a4+b4+c4.
