Recap of H2S

When this compound is mixed with natural gas, hydrogen sulfide creates sour gas, which is removed through combustion. This compound is a toxic gas and becomes acidic when combined.

2
New cards

Sour gas→ is a description from

Empirical evidence→ a result from some sort of observation→ used to validate or to disprove a hypothesis.

3
New cards

Reliability

How well the process gives you the same results→ if you repeat the experiment do you get the same results

4
New cards

Validility

How accurate the process is does the experiment measure what its suppose to.

properties of acids

Sour tasting, form electrolytes (charged ions) (particles that conduct electricity), PH less than 7, turns blue litmus paper red, and neutralizes bases.

6
New cards

Properties of Bases

Bitter tasting, form electrolytes, PH more than 7, turns red litmus paper blue, aquaeous, neutralize acids, slippery

7
New cards

Ionic Compounds

Conductive when dissolved in water

Not corrosive

Does not change litmus paper

Varying tastes

Contain metal and non-metal

NaCl, KBr

8
New cards

Molecular Compound

Contains two non-metals

Not conductive or corrosive

Does not change litmus paper

Varying tastes

C6H12O6

Are not made up of opposite ions; nothing attracts the water molcules so they don’t dissociate.

What makes Ionic compounds conductive when dissolved in water

Ionic compounds are conductive because the compounds dissociate (falls apart) into ions when they dissolve

This happens because water itself is slightly polarized (slightly positive side and slightly negative side)

The positive hydrogens attract the negatively charged ion in the ionic solution, and the negative oxygen attracts the positively charged ion.

What makes an acid an acid?

Acids form from properties

Contain H+ (HCL)

Dissolved in water

lots of acids are molecular compounds (H2SO4), and are not conducive acids are

all acids behave like ionic solutions when dissolved in water
