Apprentice Development Benefit (ADB)
A financial assistance program administered by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) to support registered apprentices attending an approved course of instruction.
Commuting Allowance
Financial assistance for daily transportation costs granted to an apprentice living more than 24km (one way) from the training institution; calculated as daily eligible distance (total km/day−48km) × days per week × 59cents/km, up to a weekly maximum of $151 (or $240 for rural/remote communities).
Living Away from Home (LAFH) Allowance
An allowance of $240 per week provided to apprentices who pay for a temporary residence in addition to maintaining their primary residence while attending training.
Travel and Overnight Accommodation Allowance
Financial assistance for transit between home and the training facility at the beginning and end of a course; overnight accommodation ($100/night) requires travel exceeding 480km (one way) or more than 9hours of transit time.
Dependent (ADB Program Definition)
A child under 14years of age or a person with a disability who resides with or is under the care of the apprentice and is wholly or partially dependent upon them for support.
Employment Benefits and Support Measures (EBSMS)
Ontario employment programs and support measures delivered pursuant to Part II of the Employment Insurance Act and the Labour Market Development Agreement between Canada and Ontario.
Oxy-Fuel Cutting Process
A thermal cutting method occurring when steel is heated to its kindling temperature (1400∘F−1600∘F / 760∘C−870∘C) and a jet stream of pure pressurized oxygen is directed into it, causing rapid oxidization that blows away the oxidized metal.
Kindling Temperature
The ignition temperature range of 1400∘F−1600∘F (760∘C−870∘C) to which steel must be preheated before oxygen injection initiates rapid oxidization.
Compressed Gas Cylinder Construction
High-pressure cylinders manufactured from seamless alloyed steel, extruded from a billet and drawn without a longitudinal seam, then heat-treated to achieve optimal strength, toughness, and ductility.
Cylinder Protective Valve Cap
A removable molded steel cap or permanent blue collar surrounding a cylinder valve to prevent physical damage; it must never be used as a lifting attachment.
Soapstone "MT" Marking
The standard industry procedure of writing "MT" with soapstone on empty compressed gas cylinders to indicate they are depleted and ready for separate storage.
Hot Work Permit
A mandatory administrative authorization required in hazardous areas containing flammable or explosive substances prior to igniting cutting torches or welding equipment.
Spark Watch Personnel
Designated safety personnel assigned to observe cutting areas where sparks (which travel 35 to 40feet horizontally) accumulate, remaining on site for a set period after work ends to prevent fires.
Cutting Goggles
Protective eyewear fitted with a #4 or #5 filter lens, protected by a clear cover lens and equipped with ventilation ports to guard against sparks, slag, and harmful radiation.
Metal Fume Fever
An acute respiratory illness caused by inhaling zinc oxide fumes produced during the heating, cutting, or welding of galvanized steel.
Phosphine Gas
A highly toxic gas generated when phosphate-containing rust-inhibiting paints or metal coatings decompose under cutting and welding heat.
Phosgene Gas
A lethal gas produced when chlorinated solvent vapors or degreasing residues decompose under the intense heat of an oxy-fuel cutting flame.
Oxygen Cylinder (O2)
A drawn seamless steel cylinder storing pure oxygen at an average full capacity of 244cuft at 2200psi (70∘F / 20∘C), weighing approximately 130lbs, fitted with a right-hand threaded valve that must be opened fully during use.
