1 incubation period

from the moment the pathogen enters the body until the first s/s appear. The patient doesn’t feel sick yet, but can still be contagious (Ex. flu: 1-3 days).

2 prodromal stage

early, vague, symptoms appear: malaise, low grade fever, fatigue. This is when the person is Cleaning equipment most contagious! They often keep going to work/school at this point and spread it.

3 illness stage

full, specific signs and symptoms of the disease appear (Ex. sore throat + cough + fever = flu). The immune response is fully at work.

4 convalescence

recovery - symptoms fade and the body returns to normal, though fatigue may linger.

prodromal stage is the exam favorite

patients are most contagious when symptoms are still nonspecific, which is why standard precautions for everyone matter so much
