Atom
The smallest unit of matter, comprising elements of the periodic table such as carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
Molecules
Groups of atoms, two or more joined together, such as water, glucose, and DNA.
Cells
The smallest unit capable of Life, from which everything is made, such as neurons and blood cells.
Multicellular Levels
Levels of organization that introduce structures made up of more than 1 cell.
Tissue
A group of similar cells specialized to perform a function, such as muscle tissue or nerve tissue.
Organ
A structure formed by tissue that performs a specific function, such as the heart or longs.
System
A group of organs that work together to perform a function, such as the digestive or respiratory systems.
Organism
Multicellular living things, such as human, dogs, and snails.
Population Level
A group of individuals of the same spices that live at a given time and in a given place, such as humans in a city or elefants.
Community Level
A group of living things that live in the same place, such as trees, birds, and insects.
Ecosystem Level
Includes all interactions between population and the environment in which they live, such as a desert ecosystem containing cacti, snakes, lizards, scorpions, sand, temperature, wind, and water.
Biomolecules
Molecules which are natural compounds necessary for life, obtained through drinking or eating.
Organic Biomolecules
Biomolecules that come from living things, including carbohydrates, proteins, lipids/fats, and nucleic acids.
Inorganic Biomolecules
Biomolecules that do not come from living things, including water and mineral salts.
Water
An inorganic biomolecule formed by 2 hydrogens & 1 oxygen (H2O) that constitutes 65% of the body and can be found inside cells, between cells, and in the blood.
Solvent (Water Function)
The function of water to dissolve substances.
Transport (Water Function)
The function of water that helps transport substances around the body.
Temperature Regulation (Water Function)
The function of water that helps regulate body temperature.
Chemical Reactions (Water Function)
The function of water in which it is involved in chemical reactions that happen in cells.
