1. Alonso Alvaro de Pineda

• He was sent to sail on the Gulf of Mexico, first to see shores of Texas

Cabeza de Vaca

• When this Explorer returned to Mexico City, after an 8-year long journey, people were astonished -in 1542, he wrote a book about his experiences as well as lands and people he had encountered.

1. Jose de Escandon

• Known as the "Father of the Rio Grande Valley/of south Texas"; founded over 20 settlements and missions along South Texas.

1. Luis de Moscoso

He and his men worried that taking ships through the Gulf of Mexico was simply unwise - when they tried to walk to Mexico through Texas, they returned back due to a lack of food. 

1. Battle of Medina

• The bloodiest battle in Texas history (1813); Spanish forces crushed the Republican Army of the North.

1. Fall of Tenochtitlan

• The conquest of the Aztec capital by Hernán Cortés in 1521, establishing New Spain.

1. Grito de Dolores

• Call for war by father miguel hidalgo, creole

1. Louisiana Purchase

• 1803 purchase of the Louisiana territory from France. Made by Jefferson, this doubled the size of the US.

1. Mexican War of Independence

• The 11-year conflict that resulted in Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821/A decade-long war (1810-1821) where Mexico won its independence from Spanish colonial rule.

1. Robert de La Salle

• Intending to begin a colony in La Louisiana, this explorer ended up shipwrecking a vessel near Matagorda bay, Texas in 1685.
