Matching Hypothesis
Suggests that people choose individuals with similar physical attractiveness as themselves. Rather than the most attractive partner available.
Reciprocity
People are attracted to those who like them in return.
Self - Esteem
Perceived self-worth derives which individuals we approach, engage with, and accept as romantic partners.
Familiarity
Mere - Exposure Effect - Repeated exposure to an individual results in increased attraction or liking, even without a conscious interaction.
Uncertainty & Trust - Reduces uncertainty & increases predictability, resulting in a feeling of safety and trust.
Internal Working Model
Experiences to caregivers as a child influences an individuals schema determining the need in romantic relationships in the future.
Social Penetration Theory
Describes how interpersonal relationships develop
Orientation - Simple information, name, birthday, nationality without recalling vulnerability
Exploration - Revealing feelings and opinions on “safe” topics.
Affective - Initial sharing of a private or personal nature
Stable - Feeling completely honest and open with the individual.
