Outline
A written plan that serves as the skeleton for a paragraph or essay; helps reveal how subtopics relate to the topic.
Thesis statement
A concise claim expressing the main argument or position of an essay.
Topic outline
An outline that uses words or phrases to list main ideas; shorter and easier to create.
Sentence outline
An outline that uses complete sentences for each main idea and its details.
Main idea
The central point or claim of a paragraph that supports the thesis.
Supporting details
Evidence, examples, or facts that back up a main idea.
IMRaD
A common research structure: Introduction, Methods/Methodology, Results, and Discussion.
Introduction (IMRaD)
Part of a research paper that states the problem or purpose.
Methodology
The design, participants, environment, instrumentation, and data analysis used in a study.
Results
The section that presents the data and findings of the study.
Discussion
Interpretation and implications of the results.
