What is mTOR?
mTOR is a protein that senses nutrients and regulates cell growth and metabolism
What are mTORC1 and mTORC2?
Two protein complexes that regulate cell growth, metabolism, and other cellular functions
What activates mTORC1?
Amino acids, growth factors, and sufficient energy
What is the main function of mTORC1?
It promotes protein synthesis and cell growth when nutrients are available
What is metabolism?
The processes by which an organism obtains, uses, and stores energy
What is adipose tissue?
Fat tissue that stores energy and produces hormones that regulate metabolism
What are the three main types of adipose tissue?
White adipose tissue, brown adipose tissue, and beige adipose tissue
What is the difference between white and brown fat?
White fat mainly stores energy, while brown fat burns energy to produce heat
What is UCP1?
A protein in brown fat mitochondria that helps produce heat
What does innervation mean?
The supply of nerves to a tissue or organ
What is sympathetic innervation of adipose tissue?
Nerve input that can stimulate fat breakdown and heat production
What is norepinephrine?
A neurotransmitter released by sympathetic nerves that can stimulate metabolic activity in adipose tissue
What is lipolysis?
The breakdown of stored fat into fatty acids and glycerol
How are the nervous system and metabolism connected?
Nerves can regulate how the body stores fat, mobilizes energy, and produces heat
Why study adipose tissue innervation in mice?
To understand how nerves regulate fat tissue and how this affects whole body energy balanc
