State

• A group of people in a collected location

• Is connected together by their government and protection, as well as location

• does not need to have the same culture

empire

• a state or government that expands for the purpose of expanding

• takes over other cultures and other groups of people, often forcing them to join their culture

• ex. Assyrian, Britain, Mongols

Nation

• group of people gathered together by common culture and religious practices

• does not need to be in a central location

• ex. Israel, Cherokee, Catholic/Christian church

• A way of analyzing how life was for an ancient civilization based solely on primary sources

• Religion, Environment, Economy, Ideology, Politics, Economy, Social Structure

Lapis Lazuli

• Highly valuable gemstone in the Middle East and Egypt

• Generally found in the Afghanistan

• Important because it displays large trade routes between ancient civilizations

• also part of many culutres and religions around there ,symbolized wealth

Akkadians

• Akkadians were the first empire ever

• ruled by Sargon

• empire ie militaristic

• spoke Semetic languages

Babylonians

• Occupied the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers

• Ruled by Hammurabi who had a strict rule - Hammurabi was the one who originally united all of the city states

  • Hammurabi was so strong that after he died the empire fell apart

  • Hammurabi would conquer his allies - this is very Imperial

Sumer

• cradle of civilizations

• basically a large group of city states between tigris and euphrates rivers

• generally had same polytheistic religion, with each city-state having their own parent god

• highly urbanized because city-states kept going to war with eachother

Assyrians

• highly agressive group of people

• came after babylonians before being reconquered by neo-babylonians

• still respected art and liturature even though it was agressive agianst other religions and conquered many groups
