Physics S3 Waves Properties
What do all waves do?
All waves transfer energy from one place to another
State the definition of a Longitudinal Wave
The particle vibration are in the same direction (parallel) as the wave is travelling.
State an example of an Longitudinal Wave
Sound Wave (Only one)
State the definition of a Transverse Wave
The particles vibrate at 90 degrees to the direction of the wave (energy transfer).
State example(s) of a Transverse Wave
Water Waves and Electromagnetic Waves
State the definition of Frequency
Frequency (Hz) is the number of waves passing a point each second.
State the definition of Period
Period (s) is the time taken for one wave to pass a point.
State the definition of Amplitude
Amplitude (m) is the distance from the midline to a wave crest or a wave trough.
State the definition of Speed
Speed (ms -1) is the distance the wave travels each second.
State the definition of Wavelength
Wavelength(m) is the distance between a point on a wave and the next identical point.
How can we use a slinky to demonstrate a Transverse Wave.
By stretching and moving the slinky sideways back and forth at right angles to the length of the spring.
How can we use a slinky to demonstrate a Longitudinal Wave.
By stretching and moving the spring back and forth in the direction of the spring.
What is the formula to calculate the frequency of a wave?
f = N / t

What is the formula used to calculate the period of a wave
T = 1 / f OR F = 1 / T

What is the formula used to calculate speed distance and time
d = v t
v = speed of wave measured in meters per second (m s -1)
d = distance wave travels in metres (m)
t = time taken for wave to travel given distance (s)
What is the formula used to calculate the speed of sound (nat 4)
v = d / t
