subtly blended shades of gray applied to imitate varying intensities of light and shadow that occur when light illuminates and is reflected of 3D forms
good for defining mass and volume of individual forms (eliminating flatness), describing surface texture, creating mood, establishing space between objects
How do you overcome the flaws of the iris adjustability? Why is doing this good?
you need to standardize the aperture by squinting your eyes, must do this in chiaroscuro, it’s good because it allows you to see the tonal range and replicate it more accurately
What are Mach bands? Simultaneous Contrast?
perceived shifts in value based on what values are next to each other (example: dark will be darker next to a light compared to dark with slightly dark)
