Steps for acute cases

Control bleeding

  • Apply pressure or a haemostatic (alginate) dressing (Algisite M) or both

Clean the wound

  • Use 0.9% sodium chloride

  • If contaminated with debris, use an antiseptic (chlorhexidine-cetrimide [Savlon] or povidone iodine [Betadine]) and rinse if appropriate

Dressing choice

  • Abrasions and simple lacerations can be covered with a film dressing (OpSite Flexigrid/Flexiroll)

  • If there is bleeding or wound exudate, use an island dressing (OpSite Post-Op)

  • If the laceration is deep, close the cut with wound closure strips (Steri Strips). If needed, support the strips with a retention bandage (Tubigrip)

  • After sutures are removed, cover suture lines with a film dressing (OpSite Flexigrid/Flexiroll). Replace every 7-10 days for up to 5 months until the tissue has gained sufficient tensile strength

Refer if dirty, severe or extensive
