The term “culture” is a contested concept. However, most sociologists like Williams describes it as a ‘way of life.’ Culture can include things like values, norms, etc.

Define norms

Norms refers to the unwritten expected rules of everyday life and behaviour. They usually undermine a value. For example: wearing a seatbelt

Define subculture

Subculture refers to a smaller group within a larger society that share the same/similar norms and values but also have their own that are unique to them. An example of a subculture are roadmen. They live in the larger British society but have their own norms and values such as wearing a jacket in the summer

Define High culture

High culture refers to products/activities that are associated with the upper class and elites. An example of a high culture is the opera as it requires significant education to understand the opera

Define Popular culture

Products/Activities that are enjoyed, accessed and associated by the majority of the population. An example of Popular culture is Tiktok, this is because more than 1Billion people use tiktok daily

Define Global culture

The growing trend of cultural products and activities becoming universal. An example of Global culture is Apple, this is because 2.5Billion people worldwide use Apple products worldwide.

Define consumer culture

Refers to a society where the buying and selling of goods is the focus of everyday life. An example of consumer culture is buying the latest IPhone anytime it drops.

Define Cultural Diversity

Cultural diversity refers to the variety of differences within or outside cultures. There are two types of cultural diversity, intracultural diversity, which is cultural diversity in one society and intercultural diveristy, which is cultural diversity between two societies

Define cultural hybridity

Cultural Hybridity refers to the mixing or merging of two different cultures, foods, practices, etc to form an entirely new identity. An example of Cultural hybridity are Braisains, which are the mix of Asian and British people
