Step response of underdamped second order systems
The graphical response curve C(t)/K depicting key transient response specifications, including delay time (td), rise time (tr), peak time (tp), overshoot (Mp), and stabilization time (ts).
Slope at origin
The initial derivative of the response curve at time zero, defined as y′(0)=0.
Stabilization time (ts)
The time required for the system response to stay within a specified error band, approximated by ts≈σπ=ζωnπ, where σ=ζωn.
Rise time (tr, 10%-90%)
The time required for the response to rise from 10% to 90%, given by tr≈ωdπ−θ, where θ=cos−1(ζ).
Peak time (tp)
The time required to reach the first peak of the overshoot, calculated as tp=ωdπ, where ωd=σtan(θ).
Overshoot (Mp)
The maximum peak value of the response measured from unity, given by Mp=e−1−ζ2ζπ=e−tan(θ)π.
σ (Sigma)
A parameter defined in relation to damping ratio ζ and natural frequency ωn as σ=ζωn.
θ (Theta)
An angle parameter defined in relation to the damping ratio ζ as θ=cos−1(ζ).
ωd (Damped natural frequency)
The oscillation frequency related to σ and θ by ωd=σtan(θ).
