Production Process
The method of converting inputs into outputs.
Input
Any resource put into a production process to achieve an output.
Output
The result of an activity in the production process.
Factors of Production
Classified into four categories: Land, Labor, Capital, and Entrepreneurship.
Land
Natural resources used in production.
Labor
Human resources involved in production.
Capital
Tools, machines, factories, and other equipment used in production.
Entrepreneurship
The ability of risk-takers to combine labor, land, and capital in the production process.
Production Possibility Frontier (PPF)
A curve representing the maximum combination of outputs possible given a fixed quantity of inputs.
Opportunity Cost
The cost of forgoing the next best alternative when making a decision.
Concave PPF
A production possibility frontier that is bowed outward, indicating increasing marginal opportunity costs.
Marginal Opportunity Cost
The additional cost of producing more of one good in terms of the loss of another good.
Productive Efficiency
Achieving maximum output from a given quantity of inputs or resources.
Productive Inefficiency
Producing less output from inputs that could produce more output if allocated differently.
Unemployment of Resources
A condition where not all resources are employed in production, leading to inefficiencies.
Technological Change
Advancements in skills and knowledge involved in the production process.
Neutral Technological Change
Technology that enhances productivity across all activities proportionally.
Biased Technological Change
Technology that disproportionately enhances productivity for certain activities or factors of production.
Economic Growth
An increase in resources, technology, or better institutions leading to an outward shift in the PPF.
Straight-Line PPF
Represents constant opportunity costs between two goods.
