What do oxidation numbers tell us
How electrons are lost or gained in a reaction.

What happens when magnesium oxide forms (example)
When it forms, two electrons are transferred from magnesium atom to oxygen atom, this means that magnesium oxide contains magnesium ion Mg2+, and oxide ion O2-
Because it lost two electrons to form magnesium ion, magnesium has oxidation number 2+ in magnesium ion,
oxygen atom gained two electrons to form oxide ion , so oxygen has oxidation number -2 in oxide ion
What happens when atoms gain / lose electrons
If atom gains electron, it has negative oxidation number,
If atom loses electron, it has positive oxidation number.
What is oxidation number of pure elements
The atoms have oxidation number of 0

What are oxidation numbers of non metals reacting with other elements

What are oxidation numbers of metals when they react with other elements.
We must calculate oxidation number of transition metals by looking at oxidation numbers of other elements present in compound
