Frontal Plane (Coronal Plane)
A cardinal plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.
Transverse Plane (Horizontal Plane)
A cardinal plane that divides the body into superior and inferior portions.
Sagittal Plane
A cardinal plane that divides the body into right and left portions.
Midsagittal Plane
A plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Parasagittal Plane
A plane that divides the body into unequal right and left portions.
Oblique Plane
A plane that divides the body at an angle.
Longitudinal Axis
An axis perpendicular to the transverse plane that permits rotational movement.
Frontal Axis
An axis perpendicular to the sagittal plane that permits flexion and extension movements.
Sagittal Axis
An axis perpendicular to the frontal plane that permits lateral flexion, adduction, and abduction movements.
Gliding Movement
The simplest type of movement where two bone surfaces slide over each other.
Flexion
An angular movement in the sagittal plane around the frontal axis that decreases the angle between two bones.
Extension
An angular movement in the sagittal plane around the frontal axis that increases the angle between two bones.
Plantar Flexion
Movement of the foot in the sagittal plane involving moving the sole of the foot down or pointing toes.
Dorsiflexion
Movement of the foot in the sagittal plane involving moving the dorsum of the foot up or heel walking.
Abduction
An angular movement in the frontal plane around the sagittal axis moving a body part away from the midline.
Adduction
An angular movement in the frontal plane around the sagittal axis moving a body part toward the midline.
Lateral Flexion
Side bending of the body or spine in the frontal plane around the sagittal axis.
Radial Deviation
Wrist movement in the frontal plane bending towards the thumb-side.
Ulnar Deviation
Wrist movement in the frontal plane bending towards the pinky-side.
Eversion
Foot movement in the frontal plane where the sole of the foot turns outward.
