Maintenance Nutrient Requirements
Nutrients required to maintain basic metabolic functions of the body.
Excess Nutrients
Nutrients acquired beyond basic maintenance requirements that support reproduction, growth, and nutrient storage.
Macronutrients
Food components required in large dietary amounts for animals to survive, grow, and reproduce, consisting of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
Micronutrients
Nutrients required in small dietary amounts for animals to survive, grow, and reproduce, including vitamins and minerals (or trace minerals) such as iron, calcium, vitamin B, vitamin C, and vitamin D.
Habitat
An area on a landscape that provides the necessary resources to support survival, growth, and reproduction of individuals, populations, and communities.
Primary Threats to Wildlife Conservation
Habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation, which drive population declines for most species by limiting access to sufficient nutrients.
Scenarios Leading to Insufficient Nutrients
Conditions causing wildlife population declines, including not enough food, poor quality food, hard to access food (burning more calories than ingested), and dangerous food access (increased risk of predation).
