Tea Act
Act created to help struggling British companies and prevent smuggling, which led to the Boston Tea Party.
Boston Tea Party
Event when colonists dressed up as Indians and threw tea overboard, causing the company to lose money.
Proclamation of 1763
Order that denied colonists access to western land due to Native American attacks following the French and Indian War.
Sugar Act
First law that put a tax on sugar and molasses from the West Indies, which colonists feared would hurt the rum industry.
Sam Adams
Revolutionary figure who believed in no taxation without representation.
Boycotts
Form of uprising by colonists who refused to buy British goods.
Writs of Assistance
Granted Customs officers the rights to search colonists' houses at any time for smuggled goods with no warrants needed.
Boston Massacre
Event where British soldiers fired into a crowd of colonists that were taunting them by throwing snowballs, leaving 5 dead, and the soldiers got away with it.
Intolerable Acts
A series of laws that closed the port of Boston, gave the royal governor control of Massachusetts, allowed British officials to have trials in England, and created more rules for quartering soldiers.
