Preliminary Treatment
The initial treatment stage using bar screens, comminutors, and grit channels to remove large debris (rags, sticks, plastics) and heavy inorganic grit (sand, gravel) to protect pumps and downstream equipment from damage and clogging.
Primary Treatment
The physical treatment stage using gravity settling basins and surface skimmers to separate heavier settleable solids that sink to the bottom from floatable materials such as grease and scum.
Secondary Biological Treatment
The process stage (such as an activated sludge aeration basin or trickling filter) where microorganisms consume dissolved oxygen to break down and consume dissolved biodegradable organic pollutants.
Secondary Clarification
The unit process utilizing settling tanks and sludge collectors to isolate and separate biological solids (floc) from treated water via gravity settling.
Advanced Treatment
Post-secondary unit operations (such as tertiary filters and nutrient removal basins) that target specific pollutants that secondary biological treatment cannot fully remove, including residual micro-particles and dissolved nutrients (Nitrogen and Phosphorus).
Disinfection
The final liquid-treatment step using agents such as UV light or chlorine to destroy pathogens and reduce disease-causing organisms prior to effluent discharge.
Return Activated Sludge (RAS)
A portion of settled biological solids from secondary clarification that is recycled back to the aeration basin to maintain active bacterial populations for treating incoming primary effluent.
Waste Activated Sludge (WAS)
The excess biological growth drained off from the secondary clarification process and routed to solids handling to maintain a stable food-to-microorganism ratio (F/M).
Primary Sludge
Settleable organic solids that sink to the bottom hopper of primary clarifiers and are pumped away to the solids treatment stream.
Liquid Stream
The continuous pathway that purifies wastewater through preliminary, primary, secondary, and disinfection/advanced processes for discharge to receiving water bodies.
Solids Stream
The residuals handling pathway where separated solids (primary sludge, WAS, screenings, and grit) are concentrated, stabilized, thickened, digested, and dewatered for landfill disposal or beneficial land application.
Food-to-Microorganism Ratio (F/M)
An operational control balance in biological treatment maintained by selectively wasting excess activated sludge (WAS) from the secondary clarification system.
NPDES Permit
A regulatory discharge permit that establishes facility-specific effluent quality standards and discharge limits based on receiving water quality, dictating the design and technology sequence of a wastewater plant.
