Fuel system
The complete path that moves a combustible fuel from its source to an appliance that burns it.
Natural gas
A utility-supplied gas typically delivered through underground piping to buildings.
Meter
A device used to measure gas usage in natural gas systems.
Service regulator
A component that reduces natural gas pressure to a usable level for buildings.
Propane
A liquid petroleum gas stored in on-site tanks and delivered as gas after pressure reduction.
Fuel oil
A combustible liquid fuel stored in tanks and delivered to oil burners using a pump or gravity feed.
Biogas
A type of fuel derived from organic materials, often generated through anaerobic digestion.
Regulators
Devices that control and maintain the pressure of gas or liquid fuel in piping systems.
Flame risk
The potential danger of ignition from fuel leaks near ignition sources.
Asphyxiation risk
The danger of oxygen displacement by fuel gases, leading to suffocation.
Draft pressure
The pressure difference that helps draw combustion air into fuel-burning appliances.
CSST
Corrugated stainless steel tubing used for flexible gas piping, requiring specific installation practices.
Spill contamination
The risk posed by leaks of liquid fuels that can damage property and the environment.
Combustion byproducts
Gases like carbon monoxide produced from the incomplete burning of fuels.
Shutoff valve
A valve that isolates a section of the piping system for safety or maintenance.
Appliance connector
A flexible connection that allows for slight movement between the appliance and gas line.
Check valve
A component that prevents backflow in fuel piping systems.
Leak detection solution
A liquid applied to joints to identify leaks by the formation of bubbles.
Pressure test
A method of checking whether the piping system can hold pressure without leaking.
Deburr
The process of smoothing the edges of cut pipes to prevent turbulence and debris.
Bubble test
A method used to check for leaks in joints by applying a solution that shows bubbles if there are leaks.
Heating oil
A type of fuel oil primarily used for heating applications in buildings.
Vaporization limits
The temperatures and pressures at which propane can effectively convert to gas.
Sediment trap
A device that collects debris and moisture before it reaches an appliance gas valve.
Flare fitting
A joint where a flared tubing end seals against a matching cone seat to prevent leaks.
Joint sealing method
The technique used to ensure a tight seal at connections in fuel piping systems.
Ventilation
The process of allowing fresh air to enter an area to mitigate the accumulation of gas.
